PEST CONTROL & PREVENTION

TEXTILE PESTS

The term "textile pests" is used to denote insects which feed on animal fibres such as wool, fur, feathers and silk. These materials are not attacked whilst still attached to a live mammal or bird.

Textile Pests include several beetles and moths. The adult beetles are no more than 10mm long, and the adult moths have a wingspan of no more than 25mm.

Textile Pests exhibit "complete metamorphosis", in which the egg hatches into an immature stage (larva) which bears no resemblance to the adult. On reaching maturity the larva changes into an immobile pupa. In the pupal stage the body of the larva is completely remodelled into the adult form. The adult then emerges from the pupal case. Thus there are four stages to the life cycle: egg, larva, pupa and adult.
